Tips for 1st Grade Parents

Your encouragement and support are extremely important in helping your 1st grader develop their reading skills.

Here are 5 ways to help make reading a fun part of your everyday routine.

  1. Point out when your child has mispronounced a word.
  2. Practice reading sight words without having to sound them out.
  3. When at the library, look for “Level 1” and “Beginning Reading” books.
  4. Ask your child to read familiar words, such as road signs and packages at the grocery store.
  5. Ask your child comprehension questions, while reading and when you’re finished.
  • What do you think will happen next?
  • What would you do or how would you feel?
  • Did you like this book?
